How 0% APR Actually Works

It sounds too good to be true, but it's real—if you understand the rules.

How It Helps You

  • 12-21 months with no interest on purchases or balance transfers
  • Every dollar goes to paying down the actual debt, not interest
  • Great for medium-sized expenses you can pay off in 12-18 months

What to Watch Out For

  • After promo ends, remaining balance accrues interest at 20-30% APR
  • Balance transfer fees are typically 3-5% upfront
  • Credit limit is determined after approval—not guaranteed in advance

0% APR is Perfect For You If...

Your plan:

Pay it off in 12-18 months

Your credit:

Good enough for approval (650+)

Your discipline:

Won't rack up new debt

My Credit Card Rules

The rules I live by

Pay in full every month

If you carry a balance, the interest erases any rewards you earned. Period.

Set up autopay immediately

One missed payment tanks your credit and triggers penalty APR. Automate it.

Keep old cards open

Credit age and utilization matter. That old card with no fee? Keep it active with a small recurring charge.

Don't max out your limit

Try to use <30% of your credit limit. High utilization = lower score.

Quick Reference

Do This

  • Pay your balance in full every month
  • Set up autopay to never miss a payment
  • Use 0% APR for planned large purchases
  • Keep old accounts open for credit history
  • Check your credit score regularly (free)

Avoid This

  • Carry a balance month to month
  • Open cards just for the bonus
  • Max out your credit limit
  • Apply for multiple cards at once
  • Close old cards (hurts credit age)
